La modernité connaît-elle le phénomène de «catharsis» ? Autrement dit, la représentation de la violence, en particulier depuis l’émergence du surrealisme au XXe siècle, incite-t-elle à son mimétisme ou bien, comme on dit qu’opère le théâtre tragique, dissuade-t-elle de passer à l’acte ?

Ce livre pose cette question de la violence non sur le plan politique mais sur celui de l’expression (artistique et textuelle). Que signifie, dans le surréalisme et les modernités, l’agessivité à l’égard des codes esthétiques, et l’agressivité à l’égard de la langue? Tel est le sens des questions ici posées, et déjà ouvertes par les reflexions historiques de Walter Benjamin ou de Roland Barthes.


Is there a phenomenon of “catharsis” in modernism? Does the representation of violence, especially since the emergence of Surrealism in the 20th century, incite imitations of violence, or dissuade from such acts, in the way of tragic theatre?

This book asks such a question not of the political, but rather of expression itself, whether textual or artistic. In Surrealism and modernism more generally, what is the meaning of aggressivity in relation to aesthetic codes, and in relation to the many codes of language? Such are the questions addressed in this book, and also raised in the historical thinking of Walter Benjamin or Roland Barthes.
